• Entry fees 100 Rs per person
• Online booking is a must

  (No entry fee for children below 12yr old and Senior citizen (age above 65 yrs) please carry your age proof ID)

Kaas plateau (Kaas pathar) Valley of Flowers Maharashtra [2021 updated]

Located in the Western Ghats the Kaas Plateau (Kas che Pathar) is famously called as Valley of Flowers of Maharashtra.The name Kaas is derived from the Kaasa tree, Elaeocarpus glandulous, the leaves of which turn from green to red as they mature. In the month of March, the tree blooms for just 15 days with beautiful white flower.Situated amidst picturesque grasslands and high hill plateaus, Plateau turns into ‘Valley of Flowers’ just after the monsoon season. The plateau comes to life, with beautiful wild flowers carpets in brilliant colours.The place has been rescently declared as a Biodiversity World Heritage Site by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization)The plateau has more than 150 species of wild flowers, shrubs and grasses. Some rare species of plants and flowers including Karvy, Smithia, Sonki, Balsam, Orchids and carnivorous (insect eating) plants like Drosera Indica can be found at this place.Kas plateau surrounds a wonderful Kaas Lake which resembles a bowl carved shape. The Kaas lake is surrounded by deep forests. You will find a calm and serene atmosphere relaxing you from daily tensions.

Information on Kaas Plateau:

The plateau is formed mainly from Basalt which is covered by a thin cover of soil formed due to erosion.

The land is uneven at some places creating natural small puddles which then harbor a typical marshy flora. This situation encourages the herbaceous nature plant growth like grasses. Botanically the flora is labeled as “herbaceous”. Small shrubs and trees are located around the periphery of the plateau.

• Altitude of  plateau is 1200 meters
• plateau area = 1000 hectares
• Hosts 850 species of beautiful wildflowers containing endemic flowers such as Anjani, Paner, Sonki, Kondal, Deepkadee and Kaasa. 624 species have already entered in the Red Data Book. Out of these 624 species, 39 are found in specially in Kas Region only.
• Now declared as a reserved forest
• Number of visitors have been restricted to 3,000 per day.

What is best best time to visit :

Towards the end of the monsoon, around August, September and October

Although it was raining & heavy mist there (and mind well when we were at Satara it was clear .. no rains & sun light too !) .. however I was pretty happy to see lot of flowers … and looking at it it seems that next 15 days it will be colour change to blue-white .. since the blue white ball flowers are just started …

How to Reach Kaas Plateau

• From Pune

  • Kaas Plateau is located on the NH 4
  • Taxi or public buses available.
  • From Satara to Plateau is just 22 kms
  • Catch a bus from Satara to Kaas.
  • Car parking is available which is just before the plateau, from there bus service is available for all.

• From Mumbai

  • Take Mumbai Bangalore i.e. Mumbai Pune express way
  • Head down to Satara
  • When you reach Satara, you need to take right turn to the city
  • Ask for Kas Pathar, get towards Bamnoli road

Getting Around

Please remember that you need to walk around the plateau and no vehicles allowed in that area. Also you need to take care not to trample upon the flowers during walking. Also no flower plucking allowed.

• Do Carry a magnifying glass with you so that you can enjoy the beauty of micro flowers (remember these are wild flowers, small in size, some are too small to see the details by naked eyes)
• Do not pluck the flowers, or even touch it, looking at number of persons visiting, even one person is plucking one flower !!! then !!! ….
• Reach there early morning … So that you can spend sufficient time to go to the details, and not just having glimpse and come back. The more you see, the more you will understand and enjoy.
• Carry rain coat / poncho, umbrella
• Wear sports shoes
• Keep an extra pair of clothes and socks, cap, goggles, water bottle and sweater
• Washrooms are not available near the Kaas Plateau so carry your own portable mobile toilet which you can get around 1200 to 1500 Rs on Amazon
• No mobile network available or very weak signal

2. Kumudini Lake :

   • Situated near Rajmarg of having 2 hector area this lake is very shallow and hence you can see some rare flower species here.

3. Bhambawali Wanrai Water Fall:

   • Mesmerizing Water fall of 260 meter height can be seen here. Situated at Bhambawai village in the south of Kas Plateau.

4. Kas Lake & Dak Bunglow:

   • Constructed about 100 years ago to supply drinking water for citizens of Satara !
   • Water flows from this lake by natural energy i.e. gravity !!
   • This lake takes care of 50% area of Satara City’s water need.

5. Ghatai Devrai:

   • Devrai is known as a reserved area of forest for nature and forest conservation
   • This is left by the village in the name of Gram Devata (Local Godess).
   • Situated about 3 kms from Kas Plateau.
   • You can also visit beautiful small Ghatai Temple here.

6. Bamnoli Boat Club:

   • Located at about 12 kms from the Kas plateau.
   • Based on east bank on “Shivsagar“ lake, which is the backwater of Koyana Dam.
   • Boat club and water sports facility is available for tourists.
   • This is also an entry point to visit the most famous trek of Vasota Fort.

   • Situated in the basin of Koyana.
   • Fort height is 1153 feets from sea level.
